Career Counseling

“Their story, yours, mine - it's what we all carry with us on this trip we take, and we owe it to each other to respect our stories and learn from them.” ―William Carlos Williams

Career counseling is a passion of mine, especially since I made a career transition from entertainment where I worked as a Television Development Executive into a career as a Psychotherapist. Career counseling, often synonymous with life-design counseling, is for those who have lost their jobs, are seeking a new job or career transition, or want to discover new possibilities of their current or idealized career identity. Maybe you want to switch industries, understand how to feel worthy without feeling burnt out, expand your business, or were recently part of a massive corporate lay-off and don’t know where to go next. Perhaps you feel a sense of burnout, loss, betrayal, lowered self-esteem, or like you’ve lost control of your destiny. Career counseling is for you.

Burnout is described in terms of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, diminished self-efficacy, and reduced personal accomplishment (Posluns et al, 2019). The antidote to burnout is considered to be self-care, however, we struggle to commit to self-care because we may not recognize our own needs, feel guilty prioritizing ourselves, lack the time and energy to “be selfish”, or don’t clearly understand who to incorporate self-care effectively into a daily routine, sometimes stemming from societal pressures to “always be productive”. Therapy can help.

Career counseling is approached from a holistic lens, looking not just at the construction of your career, but also the construction of your interpersonal and intimate relationships and your relationship to work. This type of career counseling focuses on getting clear about the stories you have about your life design, and it is my job to help provide you with clarity on the patterns and themes reflected in your life narratives to help you transition from an impasse or burnout to a place of empowerment and actionable change.

Together, we’ll view your past from the present to help you gain insight needed to prompt your next career steps, align with your self-concept, and strengthen your ability to seize on unexpected opportunities so you no longer feel stuck in a self-defeating cycle. In therapy, we’ll co-create a life script to help you redirect and re-author your career story to move forward in alignment with your values.
